Samvidhan Diwas: Celebrating the 75 Years of Constitution

Samvidhan Diwas, also known as Constitution Day, is celebrated every year since 2015 on November 26 to commemorate the approval of the final draft of the Constitution. On this day, people honor the farmers of the constitution and the values enshrined in our it. For 26 November, 1949, was a landmark moment in Indian history. It marked the movement of India into an era of self governance and democracy.

‘Constitution Is The Guiding Light’: PM Modi

On this occasion, PM Modi extended his heartfelt greetings to the people of India. Taking to X, he posted, “Happy Constitution Day to all countrymen on the auspicious occasion of 75th anniversary of the Indian Constitution.” He also shared a video highlighting the significance of constitution and how “Constitution is our guiding light.”

Reportedly, this is not the first time, for unlike oppositions allegations, PM Modi has celebrated India’s constitutional values on various occasions. In fact, during his tenure as the Chief Minister of Gujrat, PM Modi had taken out “Samvidhan Gaurav Yatra” on 26 November 2010. He organised a grand procession to celebrate 60 years of the constitution. PM Modi had led the procession walking in front of an elephant carrying a copy of the constitution on its back. In 2011, he had launched a Gujrati version of the Constitution called “Bharat Nu Samvidhan.” Finally, as Prime Minister in 2015 he had declared November 26 as the Constitution Day.

Celebrations From Samvidhan Sadan

Celebrating the Samvidhan Diwas at Samvidhan Sadan, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla extended his greetings. He said, “I congratulate crores of Indians celebrating Constitution Day today. 75 years ago, on this day, our Constitution was codified. Under the leadership of the President, the entire country is together expressing gratitude towards the Constitution today. Today, crores of countrymen will take a pledge to take the country forward by reciting the Preamble of the Constitution. With the inspiration of PM Modi, in the year 2015, we took the historic decision to celebrate 26th November as Constitution Day. Our Constitution is the result of years of penance, sacrifice, ingenuity, strength and ability of our people. In this central hall, after about 3 years of hard work, they made a Constitution binding the geographical and social diversities of the country into one thread.”

President Droupadi Murmu addressed the joint session of both the houses of the parliament at Samvidhan Sadan. During her address she highlighted the government initiatives which aimed at uplifting the weaker sections of the society. She also noted that significant progress has been made in providing housing facilities for the poor and developing infrastructure which is inclusive. She also highlighted the contribution of the 15 women members of the constituent assembly in framing the constitution. “Our Constitution is a living and progressive document. Through our Constitution, we have achieved the goals of social justice and inclusive development,” she said.

During her address she also urged all to imbibe the constitutional values in life. “I urge all citizens to imbibe the constitutional ideals into their behaviour and do their fundamental duties, and work towards achieving the national goal of a developed India by 2047,” she said.

President Murmu Released Commemorative Postage

On 75 years of Constitution President Droupadi Murmu released commemorative postage and 2 books related to the Constitution of India. She also released the first translated version of the constitution in Sanskrit and Maithili.
