Shocking Act of Political Barbarism
In a shocking act of political barbarism, DMK cadre in Coimbatore beheaded a goat on camera to celebrate BJP’s defeat, symbolically targeting state BJP president K Annamalai. The goat, paraded with Annamalai’s picture, was gruesomely slaughtered on the street amidst cheers. Jubilant DMK supporters then prepared and distributed mutton biriyani. This heinous act drew widespread condemnation for its brutality and lack of respect for political decorum.
Mocking Humble Beginnings
The grotesque act directly mocked Annamalai’s humble goat-rearing background. Annamalai, who has openly embraced his origins, has often spoken about his family’s livelihood from goat farming. This attempt to degrade him contrasts sharply with his reputation as the ‘Singham’ of Karnataka, where he served as Deputy Commissioner of Police in South Bengaluru. The incident, coinciding with Annamalai’s birthday and electoral defeat to DMK’s Ganapathy Rajkumar J, added an element of personal vindictiveness to the political rivalry.
A Disturbing Trend
This incident is part of a disturbing trend of violent political symbolism. In 2022, effigies of former BJP spokesperson Nupur Sharma were publicly hung in Belgavi, Karnataka, mirroring extremist punishments. Similarly, in 2021, the Popular Front of India (PFI) held a rally in Tenhipalam, Kerala, featuring a grotesque display of chained individuals dressed in RSS uniforms, commemorating the centenary of the Malabar massacre. These acts, while symbolic, contribute to a culture of acceptance towards violence and mob justice.
Call for Condemnation
Such barbaric spectacles endorsed by political groups perpetuate a dangerous culture of mob justice. The beheading of a goat to celebrate a political victory is not only a reprehensible act of animal cruelty but also a vile attempt to dehumanize a political rival. This act, along with similar displays of symbolic violence, deserves unequivocal condemnation. Political discourse should be rooted in respect and constructive debate, not in grotesque spectacles that incite hatred and division. The political leaders and parties must denounce such acts of hatred and Hinduphobia.
