CM Himanta’s Stand: Protecting the Identity of Assam

Must Read

The Assam government has taken a decisive step to safeguard the state’s identity. It begins by scrutinizing inter-religious land sales. CM Himanta Biswa Sarma announced that his government will closely examine such transactions to prevent demographic shifts that could alter Assam’s religious and tribal identity.

This move follows concerns that Hindu sellers, driven by short-term financial gains, often sell their properties to Muslims en masse. Thus, entire localities are gradually occupied, turning them into No-Go-Muslim-Dominant Zones! The Assam government’s intervention aims to curb this trend while ensuring land ownership aligns with constitutional provisions and the Assam Accord Clase 6.

Assam Accord Clause 6: A Shield for Indigenous Land Rights

The Assam Accord was signed in 1985 after years of agitation against illegal immigration. Its Clause 6 mandates constitutional, legislative, and administrative safeguards to protect Assam’s indigenous communities. This clause ensures that only indigenous people can own land in certain protected areas. Thereby, preventing demographic alterations caused by unchecked land transactions.

While the inter-religious sale of land was banned last year in Assam, the restriction was recently lifted.

However, the Himanta government remains committed to scrutinizing such sales under the constitutional framework. The move aims to prevent large-scale demographic changes that could jeopardize Assam’s cultural and ethnic integrity.

The Danger of Demographic Shifts and Distress Sales

One of the biggest concerns behind inter-religious land transactions is the rise of ‘Muslim-only’ neighborhoods. These entire localities were taken over by the Muslim community by slowly increasing their presence and suppressing any other religion in the society. Therefore, such localities often lead to the creation of sensitive zones where radicalism is prevalent.

In many cases, Hindu families are pressured into selling their properties due to social intimidation, leading to a slow but steady demographic shift.

Last year inter-religious sale of property was banned in Assam. However, such a ban does not follow the rule of law entirely. Thus, this year CM Himanta has lifted the ban and instead affirmed the Assam Accord Clause 6 to safeguard the Assamese Identity. Moreover, he promises a deeper scrutiny of inter-religious land sales, to prevent distress sales by  Hindus leading to Muslims-only-colonies! Thus, the Assam government aims to maintain communal balance while protecting vulnerable communities from being displaced.

A Move to Preserve Assam’s Communal Harmony

The scrutiny of inter-religious land sales is not about religious discrimination. Instead, it is a step to preserve Assam’s unique social fabric. The unchecked acquisition of land by one community at the cost of another leads to communal ghettos, causing long-term discord.
The unchecked acquisition of land by one community at the cost of another leads to communal ghettos, causing long-term discord. By enforcing constitutional and legal safeguards, Assam is setting a precedent for how states can protect indigenous rights while maintaining religious harmony.

These proactive measures by CM Himanta ensure that Assam does not lose its religious and tribal identity under the pressure of demographic encroachment.

It also prevents situations where certain regions become hostile to cultural diversity due to unchecked land ownership patterns. With Assam taking the lead, this approach could serve as a model for other states facing similar concerns. Let there be no Muslims-only-neighborhood.

Let the plight of Kashmiri Hindus serve as a warning to Bharat against deliberate No-Go-Zones where radical Muslims can subvert the law and oppress Hindus!
