Bangladesh’s Descent into Chaos: Islamist Mobs Now Target Women’s Sports
Bangladesh, once seen as a rapidly developing nation in South Asia, is now spiraling into chaos. The recent attack by an Islamist mobs on Tilakpur High School in Joypurhat district is yet another alarming sign of its deterioration. The extremists, primarily madrassa students, vandalized school property to protest against a friendly women’s football match, claiming it violated Islamic norms. This Taliban-style oppression shows how Bangladesh is inching closer to becoming another failed Islamist state.
Islamist Extremists Mobs Attack School to Stop Women’s Football Match
On January 28, a mob of radicals gathered outside Tilakpur railway station and delivered inflammatory speeches, demanding the cancellation of the match. Their justification? “Women should not play football,” as it allegedly violates purdah (Islamic dress code).

The mob then stormed the school premises, vandalizing the tin fences and terrorizing locals. Videos circulating on social media show them destroying property and issuing veiled threats.

One extremist openly declared:
“I want to warn those who want to earn money by exposing our women. Be careful. Stop all women’s games in the future. If you don’t stop, we will show our resistance.”
Despite such brazen violence, Akkelpur Police Station Officer-in-Charge Anisur Rahman and Upazila Executive Officer Manjurul Alam have conveniently claimed to have no knowledge of the attack. This inaction exposes how state institutions have surrendered to extremist elements, allowing mobs to dictate the rules of society.
A Failing State: Protests, Violence, and Islamist Rule and Mobs
The situation in Bangladesh is rapidly deteriorating, with protests and Islamist-led violence becoming a daily occurrence. Since Sheikh Hasina’s ousting in August 2024, the country has been on a downward spiral, plagued by mass protests, religious fundamentalism, and an increasing Taliban-like rule over social and political affairs.
Under the new interim government led by Muhammad Yunus, Bangladesh has seen an alarming rise in extremist activities. The same mullahs who once operated in the shadows are now openly enforcing their ideology on the streets. Just last month, violent protests erupted across the country, demanding stricter Sharia-based governance and greater restrictions on women’s rights.
If the country cannot even protect Muslim women from Islamist mobs, what hope do Hindus and other minorities have? The answer is grim.
Hindu Minorities Face Even Greater Persecution
For years, Hindus in Bangladesh have faced systematic persecution, but the situation has now escalated to dangerous levels. Attacks on Hindu temples, homes, and businesses have increased, and the government’s failure to act has emboldened the perpetrators.

International reports have documented the targeted destruction of Hindu temples and violent attacks on Hindu families, with little to no intervention from the authorities. Islamist mobs frequently take to the streets to riot over fabricated grievances, leading to destruction, looting, and violence—all while police remain silent spectators.
If the state itself refuses to protect its people, how long before Hindus are completely erased from Bangladesh?
Bangladesh on the Path to Becoming Another Afghanistan?
Bangladesh is following the same trajectory as Afghanistan before the Taliban takeover. Every day, Islamist groups gain more power, while the government and law enforcement remain passive. What starts as protests and vandalism today could soon escalate into widespread Islamic rule with total control over public life.
In just the last few months:
- Protests have increased exponentially, with Islamists dictating social policies.
- Government institutions have surrendered, failing to act against extremist violence.
- Religious minorities are under attack, with Hindu persecution worsening.
- Women’s freedoms are shrinking, with mobs even targeting female footballers.
Bangladesh is no longer just a troubled nation—it is on the fast track to becoming another Taliban-like state.
India Must Stay Alert as Bangladesh Becomes a Security Risk
As Bangladesh descends into chaos, India must be extremely vigilant. An unstable Bangladesh means:
- Increased Islamist radicalization in the region.
- A rise in cross-border infiltration into India’s northeastern states.
- Greater security threats as anti-India elements gain influence in Dhaka.
India has always extended goodwill and support to Bangladesh, but that has not been reciprocated. Instead, we now see growing anti-India sentiment and greater alignment with Pakistan and China.
With extremist mobs now openly dictating the social landscape, Bangladesh’s transformation into a failed state is inevitable—and India must be prepared for the consequences.
The attack on a school over a football match might seem like a local issue today, but it is a warning of what’s to come. Bangladesh is rapidly becoming an Islamist stronghold, and the world cannot afford to ignore the signs any longer.
